Viola Spolin - Acting Through Play

Acting begins in play. Responding. Listening. Exploring without fear of getting it “right.” This 8-week course uses Viola Spolin’s foundational theater games as a pathway back to the instinctive, imaginative, judgment-free actor. Each week we’ll work through exercises that awaken presence, strengthen the actor–audience relationship, and clarify the essential building blocks of performance: Who am I? What am I doing? Where am I? Through a mindful and embodied exploration of Spolin’s work, actors will develop greater freedom, communication, and responsiveness, skills essential to any craft rooted in moment-to-moment truth. No previous experience required; only a willingness to play. As Spolin reminds us, “Anyone can act.” This course is about rediscovering why.
