About The Course

Every discipline, from music to athletics, thrives on a dedicated culture of practice. Musicians return to their scales daily; athletes train for excellence. But for the actor, "practice" often feels gatekept by the industry. Without a booking or an audition on the horizon, the craft can feel elusive, leaving us self-critical, anxious, or even resentful toward an art form we once loved.

We believe the root of this resentment grows when our relationship with acting becomes transactional, that is, a resource we only tap into when we need something from it.

​

Monday Night Scene Study is an invitation to shift our relationship with acting from the transactional to the transformational. A meaningful and profound dynamic that has less to do with outcome and more to do with mutual respect, curiosity, and evolution. Like any other meaningful relationship, it requires showing up. It requires a willingness to know the craft more intimately, allowing for the waves, peaks, and stills that occur in any long-term devotion. This is an opportunity to build a genuine culture of practice in Philadelphia: a week-by-week-by-week deepening of skill, autonomy, and love for a craft that, when treated as an equal rather than a resource, always gives back what it receives.

The Non-Dominant Approach

This is a method-based course utilizing the Non-Dominant Approach. We shift away from the traditional tendency to "dominate" our scenes - the exhausting attempt to wear the hat of actor, director, producer, and audience all at once. This habit inevitably leads to overthinking and a feeling of elusiveness from our craft.

Instead, we center the work in the body, allowance, and the subconscious. By working from what is happening rather than what the actor wishes to occur - moving from permission instead of denial- the actor begins to develop a visceral, spontaneous, and truthful embodiment of the text and character.

In This Space, You Will:

​ Establish Equanimity with the Character:

Release the need to impose your will or "make decisions" for the character, treating them instead as a respected equal.​

 

Move from Transaction to Transformation:

​Shift away from dualistic "right/wrong" thinking toward a reliable state of creative flow and mutual respect with the medium.​

​

Build a Sustainable Prep:

Develop a pre-performance practice that fosters alignment, momentum, and a presence rooted in "enoughness" rather than "power" or "influence".​

​

Integrate Real-Time Experience:

Safely and repeatably weave sensations, judgments, and impulses into the character’s humanity, honoring your own autonomy in every moment.​

Master Objective Recall:

Learn to track cause and effect in your work with clarity, separating craft-based integration from the noise of self-judgment.​

​

Practice Boundary-Honoring Rehearsal:

Engage with partners and the tradition itself through listening, consent, and a deep respect for the creative community.
